Overview

Begin the adventure of a lifetime with this 10-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, one of the most scenic and successful trekking paths to the Roof of Africa. Known for its high summit success rate and panoramic views of West Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route provides an excellent balance of beautiful landscapes, gradual acclimatization, and moderate trekking difficulty.

This route eventually merges with the Machame Route and passes notable highlights such as the dramatic Barranco Wall. With expert guides, nutritious meals, high-quality equipment, and full porter support, your journey to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) will be safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable.


Route Options

You can choose to complete the Lemosho Route in 7 or 8 days on the mountain:

  • 7-Day Trek: Begins at 3,500 meters, bypassing the lower rainforest zone by vehicle.

  • 8-Day Trek: Starts at 2,200 meters, offering a full day of hiking through lush rainforest.

This itinerary is based on the 7-day trek, ideal for trekkers with good fitness who want to summit successfully with solid acclimatization.

 

 Itinerary – Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Kilimanjaro International Airport

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) where your guide will greet you and transfer you to your lodge in Arusha or Usa River for overnight rest.

Day 2: Lemosho Route – Day 1

Drop-off (3,500m / 11,483 ft) to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m / 11,499 ft)
A scenic drive takes you to the Lemosho trailhead, where your trek begins on the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens to high-altitude moorland and volcanic terrain.

Accommodation: Mountain tented camp
Meals: Full Board


Day 3: Lemosho Route – Day 2

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m / 12,795 ft)
Hike through moorland and volcanic ridges with expansive views. Enjoy great vistas of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance.

Day 4: Lemosho Route – Day 3

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower (4,630m / 15,190 ft) – Barranco Camp (3,960m / 12,992 ft)
This is a crucial acclimatization day as you ascend to Lava Tower, then descend to sleep at Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adapt.

Day 5: Lemosho Route – Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m / 13,238 ft)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling yet non-technical scramble with dramatic views. Continue to Karanga Valley, a key acclimatization stop.

Day 6: Lemosho Route – Day 5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m / 15,223 ft)
Ascend gradually across a rocky desert landscape to reach Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit push. Eat early and rest before the midnight summit attempt.

Accommodation: Mountain tented camp

Day 7: Lemosho Route – Day 6 (Summit Day)

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft) – Millennium Camp (3,820m / 12,532 ft)
Begin your climb at midnight, reaching Stella Point at sunrise and Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebrations, descend to Millennium Camp for recovery.

Accommodation: Mountain tented camp

Day 8: Lemosho Route – Day 7

Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate (1,650m / 5,413 ft) – Transfer to Hotel
Descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and return to your hotel for a hot shower and celebratory dinner.

Accommodation: Kiboko Lodge or similar
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch


Day 9–10: Departure

Enjoy breakfast and optional cultural activities or relaxation before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

Climbing Kilimanjaro is non-technical but physically demanding. Here are our top tips for success:

  • Go slow – Take your time to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.

  • Train in advance – Practice hikes, cardio, and strength training.

  • Add an acclimatization day – If possible, choose the 8-day version.

  • Stay hydrated and eat well – Your body needs fuel!
